Scotland fans set for Euro 2020 party after plans for giant fan zone at Glasgow Green launched

And supporters’ chiefs said the event would be a huge boost to Scotland fans – if it’s given the okay by the city council, UEFA and The Scottish Government.

Iain Emerson, editor of the Famous Tartan Army Magazine, said: “It sounds brilliant. It would be great for supporters.

“I’ll keep my fingers crossed we’re in the tournament as long as possible so we can get full use of it. Hopefully the plans get the okay.

“It was great watching fans celebrate in their living rooms when we qualified for the Euros, but getting to party with fellow fans in the flesh would be so much better.”

Glasgow Life have to submit their final plans for the Fan Zone to UEFA later this month and will hopefully be given a decision by the governing body within days if it’s okay.

Officials also need to be given approval by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government for the event.

It’s not clear exactly what the Fan Zone will look like or how Covid will impact it but it’s hoped the fact it’s outdoors will boost chances of it going ahead.

It’s understood that hosts hope in the best case scenario the event could run for the whole month of the tournament – where Scotland face off with Czech Republic, Croatia and England.

The park previously hosted thousands from across the globe during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

It staged a musical extravaganza headlined by Lulu in front of 12,000 fans, comedy, dance, and ceilidh events, as well a huge food “village”.

The park is also home to TRNSMT festival, which featured large numbers of food and drink stalls.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “An application has been received for an official, European Championships fanzone at Glasgow Green this summer.

“Due to Covid restrictions this event will require Scottish Government approval.

“Any decision by the Licensing and Regulatory Committee is based on the individual merits of each individual case.”

The potential boost emerged weeks after we told how fans face a fight to secure their traditional Trafalgar Square party base when they play Englandon June 18.

The ticket-only zone could scupper plans for thousands to flock there for the usual pre-Wembley game ritual of a sing-song and dancing in the London site’s famous fountains.
