An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred after midnight on Thursday 25 March 2021 at 12:16 am local time near Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Marysville (pop. 80) located 9 miles from the epicenter, and Lincoln (pop. 1000) 15 miles away. In Helena Valley West Central (pop. 7,900, 21 miles away), Helena Valley Northeast (pop. 3,000, 24 miles away), Helena (pop. 30,600, 26 miles away), and Helena Valley Southeast (pop. 8,200, 28 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
